I have most of the tools, I understand the process of building a boat, and so the vision started to come together at that point. It was like two years ago, two and a half years ago, I kind of got to the point where I was like I could do this. I’ve always had that end goal of building the boat some day, so I’ve acquired tools with that in mind. I’ve always been into wood working, so I’ve been collecting tools and building my wood shop for as long as I can remember. So I started digging more into boats, picking up different books, and haunting the online forums. Then it was about six years ago, I was on vacation out at Cape Cod and I went to a used bookstore, and I picked up a boat called 50 Wooden Boats, and that really got the gears going. I always thought I would get a wood shop put together and sometime in my retirement, cut down some trees, mill the lumber, and build a boat and go sailing. I always thought it would be cool to build a boat someday. Stephen: Building a wooden boat has always been on the bucket list, I guess. They want a different way to live, and they work well together with a balance of necessary skills to make it all possible.Ĭlimbing Together: How did this plan come about?Īlix: (laughing) It’s this crazy guy’s idea. Both would like to live a life embracing the freedom of the outdoors and seeing as much of the world as they can. Stephen has a plethora of experience in woodworking, but is looking to this large scale project to put his skills to the test. Alix already has quite a bit of experience in traveling, but can’t wait to gather more. They come from a community of people going out and living their adventure dreams, and they want to join in with their own dream and unique method. Through climbing, a strong friendship formed. They met in a climbing class at Unity College in Maine. If this interview inspires or interests you, feel free to support them and learn more through their site: Īlix Kreder and Stephen Dennette have been friends for a long time. I figured out how to contact them, and was thankful they were very willing to do an interview and share more of their story. In any case, I love hearing stories of the sea, crave adventure stories, and found all aspects of this to be worth further investigation. Also when I was younger, it was a dream of mine to be a commercial fisher and live on the sea…until I learned that I get super sea sick and am absolutely awful at actually catching fish. I was instantly infatuated with their idea to build a 38 ft sailboat from scratch and travel the world, because hearing of people having the guts to go for their dreams is compelling to me. The post was encouraging people to check out a crowdfunding site they were using to gain some support for their goal. It’s my favorite local climbing gym and a place Stephen Denette works as an incredible route setter. When I first heard of Acorn to Arabella, it was through a post on Central Rock Gym Hadley’s Facebook page. Going out and living your adventure dream is actually very doable, and these two enthusiastic, soon to be sailors, prove just that. They have an inspirational plan to set sail towards all their adventure goals. Using excuses is fine, but they are just that. There are a hundred excuses you could use for why, such as family, money, careers, responsibility, lack of experience, etc. Have you dreamt of seeing the world? Being able to explore every place you set your mind on? Have you longed to climb, hike, or be in nature each day of that year that met the weather requirements for said outdoor activity? Have you wished to be free from the constructs of every day societal living work, eat, sleep, repeat? A lot of people want a more adventurous, travel filled life, yet few people go after it. I’m not going to dwell on the fact that there are no jogwheels here, or that the screen usability is a mix of good (FX, Stems, Remix Decks feedback) and not-so-good (library selection is still too convoluted)… this stuff is all covered in our Kontrol S8 review. This is where you can set things like the behaviour of the touch controls (whether or not they automatically open their respective screen displays) how the touchstrips work, and the way the Stems controls are configured (toggle vs hold – more about this option later). Do expect a few head scratching moments nonetheless as you go if you haven’t done this before.Īs with NI’s other dedicated Traktor controllers, you get a separate window in the config panel: The Kontrol S5’s config panel, where you can adjust certain behaviours of your hardware. To get going, you need to go through the (it always seems to me) unnecessarily convoluted process of installing Traktor’s proprietary license / updates / download manager software, and answer a few hard-for-beginners questions before you get to the starting line, although to be fair things have improved in this area in recent years with the advent of NI’s own Traktor hardware. There’s a single USB for attaching your laptop (in case you’re in any doubt, you still need your laptop think of these screens on the Kontrol S5 as “remote” screens showing you some of the info from your computer in a more convenient place), a power input … and, apart from the choice of 1/4″ and 1/8″ headphones sockets on the front, that’s it for your inputs and outputs. Outputs are RCA and XLR for main, and 1/4″ jack for Booth. Inputs are limited to a single Aux, which allows you to plug in a Mic and/or a Line In – that’s it. Note that there are no phono / line inputs here since it’s not a standalone mixer.Īround the back is where we see the big changes. The Traktor Kontrol S5 has Master and Booth outputs, along with Mic and Aux inputs. Overall the layout does appear more conventional – minus the jogwheels and plus the screens, of course. The selector buttons for the performance pads have moved into a more usual position above the pads. It’s certainly not quite as scary looking as the S8, dropping the four mini-faders per deck, as well as the second sets of FX / further controls. It takes a little bit of checking around to realise its ambitions are more aligned with the S2 (ie it’s basically a self-contained software controller, not the potential centre of a DJing “hub”). How does it sit in the new line of controllers from NI?Īctually, on first impression the Kontrol S5 looks a bit like the S4, being the same size, having four sets of channel controls, and pretty much the same form factor. First Impressions / Setting up We take a look at Native Instruments’ latest offering, the Traktor Kontrol S5. They looked better than what I had bought by intentionally clicking on the cheapest items, so I guessed $500, at least. Boohoo, a UK-based company, and Fashion Nova, based in the US, are part of the same trend.Īfter Kelly finished filming, Lacy asked me how much I thought all the pieces-21 of them, plus a decorative snow globe-cost on Romwe’s website. “They don’t care that Vogue doesn’t think it’s a cool piece,” she said. Connie Chan, an investor at Andreessen Horowitz who invested in a Shein competitor called Cider, told me that Shein represents a newer phase of fast fashion: Now, what appears on runways and in fashion magazines matters less, and people look to one another for what to wear. By manufacturing clothing near its headquarters in Spain and streamlining the supply chain, it offered up these already proven styles in a matter of weeks at prices that felt shockingly low. In the 1990s, before Kelly was born, Zara popularized a model of borrowing design ideas from whatever was getting attention on runways. While Shein has collaborated with major celebrities and influencers (Katy Perry, Lil Nas X, Addison Rae), its sweet spot seems to be the ones with medium-size followings. In exchange, the brand gets relatively low-cost marketing, in the places where its target audience, teens and twentysomethings, prefers to hang out. She wouldn’t name her fee, though she said she makes more in a couple hours of video work than some of her friends with normal after-school jobs make in a week. This strategy, HypeAuditor says, has made it the most talked-about brand of any kind on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.Īlong with the free clothes, Romwe also pays Kelly a flat rate for her posts. They in turn share discount codes with their followers and earn a commission on the sales. According to Nick Baklanov, a marketing and research specialist at a company called HypeAuditor, Shein is unusual in the industry for the enormous number of influencers it sends free clothing to. On the ground lay a mound of shirts, skirts, and dresses from Romwe.įor years, Shein’s public face has taken the form of people like Kelly, who make up a federation of influencers filming hauls for the company. There was a Christmas tree, a cat tower, and, in the middle of the landing, an iPad mounted on a tripod and haloed with a ring light. She skipped off to the living room to dance around-a warm-up-then led me upstairs to the carpeted second-floor landing where she does her shoots. People have watched it more than 40,000 times the argyle sweater is sold out. The camera is trained on her midriff, while, in voice-over, her tongue makes juicy sounds. In a video I first watched last fall, she twirls around in her backyard, in front of a tree with golden leaves, wearing a $9 cropped argyle sweater. A couple of years ago, she started filming hauls for a Shein-owned brand called Romwe she posts a new one about once a month. On Instagram, she has 340,000 followers on YouTube, she has 1.6 million. Kelly, a redhead with the vibe of a glamorous Cabbage Patch Kid, is famous for ASMR content: tapping on boxes, tracing words in the snow outside her house. One federal trade regulator told me he had never heard of the brand, and then, that evening, emailed: “Postscript-not only did my 13-year-old daughter know the company (Shein) but was wearing a pair of their corduroys tonight.” It occurred to me that if I wanted to understand Shein, I should start with the people who seemed to know it best: its teenage influencers.Ġne bright afternoon last December, a 16-year-old named Makenna Kelly greeted me at the door of her house in a quiet suburban neighborhood of Fort Collins, Colorado. Mike Karanikolas, a co-CEO, responded, “You’re talking about the Chinese company, right? I’m not sure how to pronounce it-s-h-e-i-n.” (It’s SHE-in.) He dismissed the threat. In an earnings call last year, a financial analyst asked executives at the fashion brand Revolve about competition from Shein. Its CEO and founder, Chris Xu, declined to be interviewed for this article.Īs I began looking into Shein, it seemed almost as if the brand existed in some liminal space occupied by people in their teens and twenties and no one else. Being privately held, it doesn’t disclose financial information. Most of its suppliers are located in Guangzhou, the Pearl River port city about 80 miles northwest of Hong Kong.īeyond that, the company has shared surprisingly little information with the public. Here’s some of what’s known about Shein: It’s a Chinese-born company with nearly 10,000 employees and offices in China, Singapore, and the US. Ember Mugs are just the start, with the aim to use temperature control to change the way the world eats, drinks, and lives. I’ve found Ember’s support content to be super helpful in determining what the color flashing on my mug means and how to resolve any issues.Clay Alexander founded Ember which is a consumer electronics company and the world’s priority temperature control mug producer. There are different meanings if it is blinking red or solid red, blinking blue or solid blue, blinking white, or blinking green. The color-coding light system at the base of the mug is helpful, but there are a lot of colors to keep track of. However, each time I’ve found it easy to reset and reconnect it within a few minutes, so I wouldn’t let this deter you if you’re contemplating this investment. In my two years of using it, the mug has needed to be reset or has disconnected from the app a few times. Ember Mug 2 (14 Ounce), $150, Available on Amazon and EmberĪnd, as with any kitchen tech, this mug can be a bit finicky.Depending on your preferences, it may be worth it for you to invest in the larger size. While at the time I purchased it there were no larger sizes, Ember has recently launched a 14-ounce mug that is a pricier $130. For me, 10 ounces is a rather small cup of coffee which required quite a few trips for refills throughout the day. First, and most noticeable to me, is the size. It definitely buys me enough time to finish my drink, and lasts long enough that I can bring it with me to meetings, and it’ll stay hot until I’m back at my desk to charge it.īut this unbiased review wouldn’t be complete without a few drawbacks I’ve noticed in my past two years of using this mug. I’ve found the battery life to be fairly good, lasting a few hours when the mug is off its charging base. I leave it there to charge so it’s ready to use the next time I brew my morning coffee, evening cup of tea, or other hot beverage of choice. The mug will continue to run until it is empty, and once it’s empty you can clean it and return it to its coaster. Once I finished my drink it was simple to turn the Ember mug off. You can also monitor and change the temperature within the app if you brew a new drink or finish drinking your beverage.Īnd if you commute, Ember also makes a slightly more expensive travel mug, which would be perfect for anyone sitting in the car for long periods of time, or negotiating a lengthy subway ride every morning. While other mug warmers usually function as a hot plate for your favorite drink, the Ember mug heats your coffee from within the mug itself, so if you take your drink with you to a conference room or from your home office to your kitchen, you won’t have to worry about it slowly getting colder. The real benefit to me as a coffee drinker is that no matter where you move, the mug stays the temperature you set. In addition to the exhaustive pre-sets, you can create your own preferred temperature and save it as a customized pre-set, ranging anywhere from 120 to 145 degrees Fahrenheit. The current temperature of your mug is displayed clearly, and I watched as the temperature climbed to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Ember Appįor my first drink, I made a latte in the mug and immediately chose the “latte” pre-set temperature within the app. You can choose from Ember’s temperature pre-sets or create a custom one for your favorite drink. Within seconds, the mug was synced, and I was ready to start programming it to my desired temperature. Open the app and select your mug or thermos (Ember also makes a smart travel mug), then push a button on the bottom of the mug and the light in the base will blink blue while it connects. And, my first question after opening it: How do you pair the Ember mug? After charging it on its charging base which also doubles as a coaster, it was ready to sync via Bluetooth to the Ember app on my phone. I opted for the black Ember Mug 2, the 10-ounce design. It comes in a variety of colors, like the matte black and white (linked above), and metallic silver, copper, or gold. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed about the mug is the sleek look of the design.
The fracture pattern has a tendency to be more vertically oriented and biomechanically more unstable. This occurs from an axially loaded, high-energy force onto an abducted hip. In young adults with better bone quality, higher-energy mechanisms of injury usually cause a basicervical or more distal neck fracture. A transverse fracture pattern with impaction at the fracture site is common. Elderly patients with poor bone quality or a low-energy injury usually sustain an intertrochanteric hip fracture or a subcapital femoral neck fracture. The fracture pattern seen in young adults is different than that of elderly patients. Radiographic evaluation should include anteroposterior (AP) and lateral plain radiographs of the entire femur, as well as an AP radiograph of the pelvis. 9– 12 Variables that have been hypothesized as contributing to femoral head osteonecrosis include vascular damage from the initial femoral neck fracture, 4, 12-15 the quality of reduction or fixation of the fracture (restoring flow to the distorted arteries), 4, 16-20 elevated intracapsular pressure (tamponade from blood), 12, 21-26 and the position of the implants. Terminal branches supplying the femoral head are intracapsular thus disruption or distortion of these terminal branches likely plays a significant role in the development of osteonecrosis. 8 The lateral epiphyseal artery complex originates from the MFCA and courses along the posterosuperior aspect of the femoral neck before supplying the femoral head. 5– 8 The largest contributor to the femoral head, especially the superolateral aspect of the femoral head, is the MFCA. Femoral head blood supply comes from three main sources: the medial femoral circumflex artery (MFCA), the lateral femoral circumflex artery (LFCA), and the obturator artery. I do want to warn you that this method will work but it’s not going to be perfect, there’s a lot of troubleshooting you may have to do, calibration can be finicky and it’s not going to be cheap. Unfortunately there is no easy, plug and play way to do this as the way a Quest tracks your play space, hands and headset is way different from how a PCVR headset does, but technically there are solutions out there. The vertical combat system lets you climb every surface, so gaining the high ground is ridiculously easy. With the Quest 2’s affordable price point and more and more people getting into VR, more users are researching how they can get the most out of their Quests, including full body tracking. While you can build, the gunplay and experience are distinct enough to feel different. This game is a VR-exclusive battle royale shooter, and it’s no Fortnite clone. The title has no spaces, so you read that correctly. It’s an engaging game you can enjoy for hours. The game feels faster and slower at once because you get to slow down time as you wish.Ĭompared to the original experience, you can feel the bullets flying toward you in slow motion. You play as a time-controlling hitman aiming to fight through hordes of enemy agents. The original SuperHot had already entertained many gamers, but the VR version now brings the immersion factor up by at least tenfold. If there’s a game to show off what VR is capable of, few can surpass this one. The attention to detail, story, and interactions left a pleasant taste in reviewers’ mouths. The developers of Half-Life: Alyx didn’t think the game would sell very well, but reality proved them wrong as it did very well on the market. The VR gaming experience is more front-and-center than other media, allowing for unprecedented immersion. While VR games on Steam aren’t as numerous as traditional titles, there are still some gems worth picking up. Virtual Desktop lets you optimize the connection by tweaking some settings, so we recommend doing so and finding a sweet spot. On your Quest 2, open Virtual Desktop and connect.Launch the PC client and keep it running.Buy the Quest 2 app version on your headset. If you don’t have this network, you won’t be able to use Virtual Desktop. However, Virtual Desktop requires a 5 GHz AC WiFi network, while Air Link doesn’t force you to use one. A consistent internet connection will reduce the possibility of lag and delay. It varies between users, so you can try it if Air Link isn’t working for you. Some Quest 2 owners find Air Link unreliable but manage to replace it with Virtual Desktop with better results. It places your PC display on your headset and predates Air Link. Older VR users may know Virtual Desktop, a third-party app that lets Quest 2 owners interact with their computer screens using their VR headsets. Owners should stick with a wired connection or wait until the problem is addressed. Unfortunately, several days before writing time, a Windows 11 update brought some unwelcome performance deterioration for Quest 2 owners using Air Link. Air Link was later made available with the Oculus Quest, but it’s still not as good. It was one of the main improvements and a significant selling point over the previous model. The first Quest headset could use the wired method, but Oculus Air Link works best with the Quest 2. Access your Steam VR games and start playing.Select the Desktop button at the bottom bar.Press the Oculus button and bring up the home menu.Īt this point, you need to launch Steam through your Quest 2.Nevertheless, Air Link feels excellent when there’s a consistent connection. However, a substandard WiFi signal can disrupt the link, leading to unpredictable delays and other problems. Through Oculus Air Link, the Quest 2 can connect to a PC for a seamless experience. However, having a cable connected to you may not be the best experience for some players. Click on Add Headset and find your Quest 2.Ĭompared to a wireless connection, you get a stable link that isn’t affected by internet speeds or any web-based delay.Connect the USB-C cable to both devices.A 15-foot cord or longer works best, as you don’t want to be restricted while wearing a VR headset. You need a USB-C cable to link the headset to your PC for a wired connection. The former is necessary no matter if you’re playing wirelessly or not. It would be best if you had the Steam client-ready as well. You’ll need the Quest 2 desktop software, available for free from the official website. So overall this is an amazing and efficient service, managed in a professional and competent way. When booking the service I emailed Epic Mountain Express several times, and then again just before I left for the US, and each time my email was answered in less than 20 minutes. It's a minibus, so you're quite up-close with other passengers, but that's okay, and people were friendly and happy to chat. On return, the minibus was on time at my hotel and the driver was helpful and informative when we arrived at the airport. However, the service continued with a little wait and in the snow and ice Larry was a steady and careful driver - as well as lending me his arm to help me across the snow on arrival. It was manic at the airport when I arrived from Heathrow and I was worried because of the extreme weather conditions that the minibus run by Epic Mountain Express might not run. Travelled from Denver Airport to Vail on 22nd December in the worst of the winter storm. Uber barely exists in Vail and is restricted from entering the airport area.) (A private taxi/limo service is an outdated hassle to call around and book and very expensive for two, if you are lucky enough to find one. This is no doubt a highly profitable business but also a basic and essentially monopolistic service. But Epic not having nearly enough vans (or drivers?) to provide reasonably timely service to/from EGE is a disgrace. We have been Vail regulars for 30+ years and have never had this kind of experience.Ĭertainly if you are going to book the shuttle do it well in advance. (We were literally planning to take a public bus to Vail at that point). Fortunately then another flight arriving at the same time as ours was diverted and they suddenly had open space. We had the same exact experience in January, hardly a peak period. This suggests a shocking level of under-capacity.įortunately we were able to reserve a taxi in both directions, and being five of us this time, it is actually cheaper than the shuttle. One has to enter one’s actual flight number as well as ETA when booking.) We just booked a week in advance and were offered a 2:30pm EGE airport pickup for a 10:38am arriving flight and a 5:05am Vail Village hotel pickup for an 11:50am return flight! Thats four hours before the ‘normal’ pickup time in Vail Village. Insulting lack of availability for what is now a Vail Associates owned monopoly shuttle service.
